Top 5 Net Payout Yield Companies To Watch For 2014

As my colleague Michael Aneiro noted, the Fed spooked markets with a hint of an earlier rate hike. But not every stock’s a loser.

Reuters

Sure, the S&P 500 has fallen 0.9% to 1,855.85 today at 3:17 p.m. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has dropped 149 points, or 0.9%, t0 16187.11, and just four components are up on the day.

But there are winners–and they’re any stock that’s helped by higher rates. There are mutual fund companies with big money-market fund businesses, who wouldn’t be forced to run these funds for what is essentially free. Federated Investors (FII), for instance, has jumped 2.1% to $27.99. Life insurance companies, too, are rising because they should be able to earn more on their investments. MetLife (MET), for instance, has risen 1.3% to $53.03.

Even the discount brokers would benefit. In a report released yesterday, Bernstein’s Brad Hintz noted that for every percentage point increase in rates,Charles Schwab’s (SCHW) net revenue would grow 4%, while eliminating fee waivers would add another 12%. Similarly, every percentage point rate increase would add 11% to 15% toTD Ameritrade’s (AMTD) pre-tax income.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Daniel Gibbs]

Several weeks ago, I wrote an articlethat suggested that Vanguard Natural Resources (NASDAQ: VNR  ) could offer a way to hedge the costs of heating your home this past winter given the exceptionally cold weather and high bills. Well, now the winter is beginning to wind down (the snow that some of us saw this past winter not withstanding), and soon it will be spring with its accompanying lower heating bills. So, should anyone who bought Vanguard as protection against high heating bills sell their shares now? There is little reason to, as the company still offers a very strong monthly dividend and reported very strong resultsat the end of last month.
