For its part, Northrop issued a statement Monday declaring that it and its partner company EADS (NASDAQOTH: EADSY ) remain "committed" to the program, and averring: "[T]he full Euro Hawk system, including the mission control system and the sensor, has performed flawlessly and safely throughout the entire flight test program. Media reports that indicate there are challenges with the aircraft's flight control system, as well as excessive costs associated with completing airworthiness certification, are inaccurate."

Foolish takeaway
Boeing's planes have, and Boeing's stock has, stood the test of time -- 97 years, to be precise. Does all this prove conclusively that Boeing stock should be bought today, at a 19 P/E ratio? Maybe, maybe not. But before you count Boeing out over a couple of mishaps, remember -- its biggest rival today, Airbus parent EADS (NASDAQOTH: EADSY ) , costs more than 25 times earnings. And EADS has only been around since 2000. - [By Ben Levisohn]
Boeing (BA) dropped 4.3% to $132.29 this week, making it the biggest loser in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Boeing fell after Emirates cancelled an order with Airbus (EADSY), raising concerns that more cancellations could follow, RBC cut its shares and Eric Cantor lost in a primary.

Boeing stock gained 84% in 2013 beating the average Aerospace & Defense company by more than 20 percentage points, thanks to a huge rush of orders from emerging economies, a dividend hike and other catalysts that also helped boost Airbus (EADSY). The stock was named a top pick by Citigroup Jason Gursky.

Currently, three main companies supply security equipment to the TSA - Safran (SAFRY.PK), Smiths (SMGKF.PK), and Level-3 Holdings (LLL). All three of these companies sell the whole range of their products to the TSA, with an ETD offering included. Recently, however, a new company, Implant Sciences Corporation (IMSC.PK) received approval from the TSA to begin selling their ETD equipment to airport security professionals. This approval has opened the door for IMSC to begin taking some market share away from the more established players in the US and beyond.

Major profits ahead
With a price tag of $52 billion, the KC tanker contract is one of the Pentagon's largest weapons initiatives. Further, some analysts estimate that with future parts and maintenance, the contract worth could climb to $100 billion. This is great news for Boeing, but it's also great news for its subcontractors on the project -- Honeywell International (NYSE: HON ) is supplying the auxiliary power unit and cabin pressure control unit, Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC ) is supplying Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures, United Technologies' (NYSE: UTX ) subsidiary Pratt & Whitney is supplying the engines, Rockwell Collins (NYSE: COL ) is supplying the integrated display system, and Raytheonis supplying the digital radar-warning receiver. All in all, this is a major initiative for defense contractors, and good news for Boeing is good news for all. - [By Monica Gerson]
