Best Shipping Companies To Watch In Right Now

Alamy NEW YORK -- Target (TGT) is offering for the first time free holiday shipping on all items, including even $6 lipsticks, as the discounter throws itself in the ring to compete better with the likes of Amazon. The Minneapolis-based chain said its free shipping offer starts Wednesday and will last through Dec. 20. The move is unusually early for a retailer -- coming weeks before the official holiday season kickoff over the Thanksgiving weekend -- and could squeeze Target's profit margins. But the strategy underscores how retailers are willing to do whatever it takes to grab shoppers in the holiday shopping season, which accounts for about 20 percent of the retail industry's total sales

We know shipping costs play a big role in online purchasing decisions.

Advisors' Opinion:

For Wall Street types, single-family foreclosures can be bought cheaply and in bulk, then fixed up and rented. Companies like the Blackstone Group (NYSE: BX  ) and Colony Financial (NYSE: CLNY  ) have been very active in this market, with the former purchasing 16,000 homes just last year, and the latter ramping up its own portfolio to approximately 7,000. This new industry has also spawned fresh entrants from the REIT field, Silver Bay Realty (NYSE: SBY  ) and Altisource Residential, (NYSE: RESI  ) two trusts that were spun off earlier this year from parent companies Two Harbors Investment (NYSE: TWO  ) and Altisource Portfolio Solutions (NASDAQ: ASPS  ) , specifically to take advantage of the boom in the foreclosure-to-rental market.

As a dividend investor, I would expect that names in my portfolio in 2042 would likely be different than the names present in 2012. After all, since 2008 I have experienced several cuts in my income portfolio. I had one cut in 2008 (ACAS), two cuts in 2009 (GE, STT), one cut in 2010 (BP) and no cuts in 2011 and 2012. With three months to go in 2013, I have not experienced any dividend cuts either. By maintaining a relatively diversified portfolio consisting of over 40 individual issues, my total dividend income is somewhat immune by dividend cuts or eliminations. If two companies in an equally weighted portfolio of 40 issues completely eliminate dividends but the remaining 38 issues raise distributions by 5%, my dividend income would be unchanged for the year. Assuming that I manage to replace the fallen dividends stocks I sold with fresh income stocks, I might even be able to eke out a gain in total dividend income. Monitoring 40 50 positions should not take a lot of time as well. Assuming that investors have done their homework in the initial stage, future time could be allocated reading annual reports and maybe quarterly reports while also performing an annual checkup of their position. I would not expect this to take more than 10 -15 hours/week.

FDUS is one of the few BDCs to consistently grow its NAV on a quarterly basis over the last two years. This is because most BDCs are regulated investment companies ("RIC") required to distribute at least 90% of capital gains, dividends and interest to shareholders to avoid taxation at the corporate level and 98% of net investment income to avoid paying a 4% excise tax. Excluding American Capital (ACAS) which converted from a RIC to a Subchapter C and does not pay a dividend, only a few BDCs have been able to pay a healthy dividend while increasing value per share - as discussed in "Triangle Capital: Is It Priced For Total Return?" including Main Street Capital (MAIN) and Triangle Capital (TCAP).

Sysco has avoided the margin compression suffered by chicken producers Tyson (NYSE: TSN  ) and Cal-Maine Foods (NASDAQ: CALM  ) and which was more deeply felt by smaller food-service operator Nash-Finch (NASDAQ: NAFC  ) . (It is omitted from this chart due to its drop into outright negative operating margin territory (a decline of roughly 250% in two years.) However, fellow food-service company United Natural Foods (NASDAQ: UNFI  ) has actually improved its margins, and restaurant chains both large and small (well, mid-size) have done an admirable job of holding the margin line in the face of rising input costs. So it appears that scale alone isn't enough to help Sysco outrun the rising costs of its products.

Advisors' Opinion:

The new road map is aggressive, but First Solar has one of the best research and development teams in the industry, and I think it has a good chance of reaching these goals. What may matter more than First Solar's progress in thin film is how quickly crystalline silicon modules are able to increase efficiency over the same time frame. As I said, SunPower is already producing modules at 21.5% efficiency, and this year GT Advanced Technologies (NASDAQ: GTAT  ) is introducing equipment it says will increase crystalline cell efficiencies by 4% or more to more than 22% efficient (about a 20% efficient module).

RadioShack (RSH) just cant ! buy a break.

RadioShack’s plans to close 1,100 stores over the next five years were scuttled by lenders in mid-May when the terms for allowing it to do so were deemed unacceptable by RSH management and board. As a result, its closing fewer stores and will instead find other ways to cut costs.

  • [By Steve Symington]

Shares of RadioShack (NYSE: RSH  ) fell by more than 20% during Thursday's intra-day trading, after reports surfaced saying the electronics retailer is considering hiring a financial advisor to help fix its balance sheet. By the end of the day, however, the stock did manage to recoup the majority of its losses to close down just 7%.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

After RadioShack (RSH) released earnings yesterday, the folks at Wedbush have reiterated their belief that the beaten-down retailer’s stock is heading to $0. Analyst Michael Pachter and team explain:

    Getty Images

It appears to us that RadioShack will quickly running out of liquidity options and must raise capital in order to survive this holiday season. The company proposed several alternatives, including a sale, a partnership through a recapitalization and investment agreement, and in or out-of-court restructuring. RadioShack anticipates announcing a recapitalization alternative in the near term. We believe the most expedient and likely solution is a prepackaged bankruptcy.

Reiterating our UNDERPERFORM rating and 12-month price target of $0 as declining CE sales and continued margin erosion will likely compel the company to enter bankruptcy in order to pursue its turnaround. Our price target reflects our expectation that creditors will force a reorganization and wipe out RadioShacks equity.

Shares of RadioShack have dropped 10% to 92 cents at 2:34 p.m. today.

Top 10 Electric Utility Stocks To Buy For 2015

After being spun off from its parent company, Dean Foods (NYSE: DF  ) , health-oriented food purveyor White Wave Foods (NYSE: WWAV  ) offered the market a nearly pure play on plant-based food items, one of the fastest growing areas within the industry. The spinoff was originally priced rather high, though the company is certainly growing. Now, the secondary offering is coming to a close and the spinoff is nearly complete while the company posts strong preliminary results. Even at its premium price, is White Wave Foods a buy after the spin-off is completed?

Strong hints
White Wave, as I mentioned, owns several plant-based food brands that are riding the wave of healthier shoppers and wellness-peddling markets. The strategy, thus far, has worked out. In its preliminary earnings report, White Wave showed investors and analysts strong double-digit earnings growth, while sales grew more modestly. The results were driven by a bump in volume, even though its sales growth was less than half that of the profit growth.

This is quite a bit better than the 9.2% gain of the iShares MSCI Italy (EWI) or the 8.9% rise in the iShares MSCI Austria (EWO). All three have done significantly better than the Spyder Trust (SPY), which is up 3.6%. The French and German country ETFs have not yet moved above their late 2013 highs.

Additional strengths supporting Aflac business model can be found by reviewing their common equity or book value (ceq), the lime green line on the following graph, in comparison to their current market value (mkval), the aqua colored more jagged line on the graph. Aflac book value has increased steadily except for a minor pause during the Great Recession of 2008. In contrast, their market value has been much more cyclical and erratic. I believe this additionally reflects current undervaluation of Aflac shares. This further supports my contention that Aflac is a great business that is currently on sale.

I normally don't look at charts much, but comparing Orange to its competitors in the French telecommunications market is quite fascinating. As one can see, incumbents Bouygues (BOUYF.PK) and Vivendi (VIVHY.PK) (owner of SFR) saw similar price declines. The market, on the other hand, rapidly bid up the price of new entrant Iliad SA (ILIAF.PK), as a result of forecasts for Iliad to capture significant mobile market share (which it did, around 10%). The wide divergence in price relative to changes in underlying value favor going long the incumbents, including Orange. Because this time it's different.

Several retailers should hold profits, even with late holiday discounts. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) should post huge revenue growth and net income, if the e-commerce firm has not undermined margins with free-shipping costs. Higher margin retailers that cater to the middle class, like Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M), should have built good enough margins to keep them relatively high as they bring in people who shop between Christmas and the end of the year.

Mark Lennihan/AP For top U.S. retailers, free delivery is now the norm. That is good news for shoppers, but not so much for investors. During the just-ended holiday season, outlets from Target (TGT) to Walmart (WMT) to Amazon (AMZN) expanded their free-delivery options, adding more items eligible for free shipping. They also did away with minimum spending thresholds to qualify for the perk. Yet as more U.S. shoppers view free shipping as their right, retailers struggle to make a profit online. That struggle will become evident in coming weeks when companies report financial results for the holiday quarter, analysts said. "For most companies, it is a very expensive proposition to try to offer fast and free," Steve Osburn, director of supply chain for consulting firm Kurt Salmon, said in an interview. "It's really eating away at the margin dollars at some of these retailers." Shipping remains a key battleground in the escalating war between brick-and-mortar retailers and Amazon.com Inc, with both sides spending big on logistics. Offering free shipping has long been standard practice during the holidays, but in 2014, retailers leaned on it heavily all year long. What Amazon Says (and Won't Say) The number of online purchases in the United States with free delivery hit a high of 68 percent in the third quarter of 2014, according to industry-data tracker comScore, up from 44 percent the previous year. Amazon said that it saved customers $2 billion in shipping fees over the holidays. Much of those savings came via Amazon's Prime program, which offers free shipping on most items for a $99 annual fee. The company declined to share the previous year's figure. Nor would it share estimates on how much more Prime customers bought compared with others, which would provide some insight into how much Prime might boost Amazon's revenue. Forrester Research analyst Sucharita Mulpuru estimates that Amazon loses $1 billion to $2 billion a year on U.S. Prime shipments. Othe

Of course, we have to start with a real estate investment trust (REIT). One of the best REITs right now looks to beCapstead Mortgage Corp.(CMO); it’s gained 9% so far this year as its similarly sized peers all sit in the red.

  • [By Amanda Alix]

In a show of bravado, several mREITs have declared dividends within the past week, with nary a decrease in sight. I do not mention these things to discourage you from international stocks. I have been purchasing BP (BP) between $39-$43, and I will eventually purchase Anheuser-Busch (BUD), Nestle (NSRGY.PK), Royal Dutch Shell (RDS.B), and two or three other international companies when the stars line up. My point is that you should not feel an obligation to own international stocks simply for diversification's sake. If you find a good international stock with a business model you understand and it trades at an attractive price, then great. You should buy it. But owning international stocks does not have to be a necessary part of your strategy. Despite what Mankiw advises in the New York Times, you can build a diversified collection of "global stocks" simply by investigating where certain American multinationals generate the bulk of their sales and earnings.

The best-performing Dow component of the day was Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) , which "only" declined 0.99% this afternoon. Yes, you read that correctly; a nearly 1% decline in value helped Cisco become the best performer of the day. Sixteen of the Dow's 30 components fell between 2% and 3% in value today, while another six stocks lost 3% or more. One reason Cisco may have performed better than its fellow components was the announcement that the company will acquire Composite Software for $180 million. The software company specializes in taking data from multiple storage locations and making it seem to the user that it was all stored in one centralized place.

Riverbed's acquisition of OPNET is taking longer than expected to digest, and the company's core WAN business looks to take a big turn for the better next year. Therein lies the problem -- next year is still a ways away. In the interim, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO  ) has been fiercely contesting Riverbed's WAN optimization leadershipand, with a much larger war chest and much deeper pockets, the networking leader can certainly be viewed as a big threat. Riverbed has to meet this threat head-on with new leaders, as its CFO recently stepped down, and the company has been adding new executives this year, as well. This could be a good thing, but we analysts can only comment from the outside, and results of the new honchos' decisions will take time to filter out. In the interim, its relatively low market cap could entice Cisco to come calling with an open checkbook.
