For a couple of months now, we've been anticipating an annoucement fromInterOil (NYSE: IOC ) to see whom it will select as its operations partner. Well, based on what ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM ) has said recently, it appears that our wait is just about over.
Exxon has just announced that it's in exclusive talks with InterOil and its partner Pacific LNG Group to purchase a working interest in InterOil's Elk and Antelope fields. The deal would also involve selling some of the gas at these fields to Exxon's LNG export terminal that's currently under construction and is expected to make its first shipments in 2014. The deal is not yet completed and will need toreceive approval of the Papua New Guinea government.
Unlocking potential
For quite some time now, InterOil has been one of the most undervalued energy plays on the market. Based the company's net recoverable reserves, the company is currently valued at about $1.17 per thousand cubic feet equivalent of natural gas. One of the biggest reasons investors have shied away from the company is the risk involved. For years the company has been using cash flows from its modest-sized refinery and downstream and marketing operations to fund its upstream natural gas development. Without adequate pipeline installations and an export terminal, most of these wells have been drilled, tested, and shut in until its own LNG facility is online.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Contributing the most to the Dow's decline is Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT ) , which is down 2.2%. The construction and mining equipment maker reported an even larger pullback in earnings and revenue than investors had expected, with earnings per share falling 43% on a nearly 16% decline in sales. Given the poor levels of global construction activity and the big declines in commodity prices during the second quarter, the news wasn't a huge surprise, but Caterpillar also cut its full-year 2013 earnings guidance by $0.50 per share to $6.50. Although the company will implement further cost-cutting measures throughout the rest of the year, Asia continues to weigh heavily on Caterpillar's sales, which dropped 21% in the region. Any recovery for Caterpillar will likely take longer than expected unless economies around the world rebound quickly.

But with two agencies seemingly giving the procedure a green light to continue, the Justice Department is stepping in to investigate supposed anticompetitive practices. Halliburton (NYSE: HAL ) , the favorite whipping post of environmental activists, is the industry leader, with an estimated 29% share of the pressure pumping market, while Baker Hughes had a 4% share.Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) , which is the second biggest services provider with a 21% share, hasn't said whether it's received any inquiries from the government.

I noted in Part 1 that Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) , easily the largest participant in the oilfield services space, is appropriate for subsea investing. The same can be said of seismic. The company's WesternGeco unit leaves its competition in the dust -- or water -- from the perspective of both size and technological sophistication.

Many oil and natural gas service companies called the fourth quarter of 2012 a trough in the North American market. By all accounts so far during this reporting period, that appears to be especially prescient. International heavyweights Halliburton (NYSE: HAL ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB ) both witnessed signs that a second half turnaround us likely upon them and the industry as a whole.
