It was a mixed day for economic data for the broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) .

Following numerous days where we've had clearly defined reasons to head higher or lower, U.S. retail sales data gave investors a reason to smile. In April, retail sales jumped 0.1% compared to estimates that had called for a contraction of 0.3%. Counting for about 30% of U.S. consumer spending, it's always a good sign when retail sales rise during tax month.

Countering that optimism were ongoing rumors that the Federal Reserve may wind down its bond-buying program sooner than expected. We've seen this back-and-forth game of "Will they or won't they?" for some time now. But with the S&P 500 near an all-time high, the stakes are even higher now if interest rates begin to rise.

Overall, the S&P 500 finished the day fractionally higher by 0.07 points (0.00%) to close at 1,633.77. The move today may have been muted, but the move in the following three stocks was certainly eye-popping.

    After the closing bell on Wednesday, WD-40 Co. (WDFC) released its third quarter earnings, posting slightly higher revenues and net income than last year’s Q3.

    WDFC’s�Earnings in Brief

    WD-40�reported third�quarter revenues of $95.65 million, up from last year’s Q3 revenues of $93.1 million. Net income�for the quarter came in at $10.4 million, or 69 cents per share, up slightly from last year’s Q3 figures of $10.27 million, or 66 cents per share. WD-40 missed analysts’ estimates of 72 cents EPS on revenues of $99.16 million. Looking ahead, WDFC sees FY2014 EPS in the range of $2.70-$2.83 on revenues between�$380 million and�$387 million, while analysts are expecting EPS of $2.75 on revenues of $387.44 million.

    There are few things in life I know with certainty... But I know this: Barring the end of the world, the price of oil is going to fall and the price of natural gas is going to rise. In my mind, you ought to buy all the natural gas you can afford because these energy resources will not be cheap forever.

       There were other signs that natural gas was at a very significant low. First and foremost, Wall Street had gone from being massively long natural gas in 2005 and 2006 to being almost uniformly short. Trading volume on natural gas futures had soared – up 31% in a year, with almost all the financial firms being short.    But the most important factor in my analysis was that from a physical, arbitrage perspective, natural gas couldn't get any cheaper. Natural gas is just one form of energy. In theory, as an energy source, it's totally interchangeable with other fossil fuels. Think of it this way: A barrel of oil has 5.825 million British thermal units (Btu) of energy. One thousand cubic feet of gas contains just a little more than 1 million Btu of energy.   Thus, on an energy-equivalent basis, you might expect natural gas to trade for one-sixth the price of oil. That doesn't actually happen very often, though... In the real world, oil has vastly more utility. It's far more widely used in transportation, and it's much easier to transport. (It doesn't have to be frozen first, like natural gas does.)   So in the real world, historically, oil has carried a 10x premium in price to natural gas on an energy equivalent basis. But last April... the price of oil was trading at over a 50x multiple to the price of natural gas. This enormous premium simply couldn't last – it was impossible.    That's why I was telling you to be a pig in natural gas.
