    InterActiveCorp (IACI) bought Ask.com for $1.85 billion in 2005. The new Perion will be worth only about 40% of that. After the merger, Perion will leapfrog its much larger rivals: Babylon and AVG (AVG). Finally, Perion should be able to increase its operating margins as it can spread its SG&A costs over a much larger base (Conduit EBITDA margin is 32% vs. Perion's 23%). Perion will keep its senior management team intact: Josef Mandelbaum will remain its CEO and Yacov Kaufman its CFO. Perion has successfully orchestrated a roll-up acquisitions of privately-held Sweetpacks and Smilebox, so I have high confidence that they know how to integrate a new business.

The first quarter saw more IPO activity than any other initial quarter since 2000, with 64 companies listing on various U.S. exchanges raising a collective $10.6 billion. That's more than double the number of IPOs that took place in the first quarter of 2013. This is directly related to the health of the overall stock market. Generally speaking, the better shares are performing, the higher the chance of an issuer being successful on IPO day. After all, who's eager to buy anything when the market's in the doldrums? Yet even in a good environment for IPOs, companies occasionally get the jitters and withdraw their listings. Sometimes this is due to the overall atmosphere on the market; sometimes it's because of difficulties with the issuing company itself; sometimes it's both. Whatever the reason(s), the notable examples below scampered away before they could become publicly traded entities. Square One of the top anticipated IPOs of 2014 was for this cutting-edge e-commerce company, which pioneered the use of smartphone and tablet payment card readers. Then there's Square's impeccable geek credentials, thanks in no small part to its founder-CEO Jack Dorsey, who was one of the guiding lights behind Twitter (TWTR). From a classy handbag maker carrying its latest financials to market, to a blowout report by the leading streaming video service, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst in the business world. Netflix (NFLX) -- Winner Netflix was last year's top performer among S&P 500 stocks, and it's off to another strong start in 2014. Shares of the leading video service hit another all-time high this week after it posted blowout quarterly results. Netflix closed out the year on a strong note with more than 44 million streaming subscribers worldwide and expanding profit margins. It expects to top 48 million streaming members by the end of March. Strong financial results naturally make you a winner, but Netflix also got the market excited by announcing that it will soon offer a variety of pricing plans. More importantly, it's suggesting that it may eventually increase the price of its basic $7.99 a month plan. Coach (COH) -- Loser Luxury handbags are still selling, but Coach totes aren't faring as well. The iconic maker of high-end purses and accessories posted disappointing quarterly results on Tuesday. Sales declined by 6 percent during the seasonally potent holiday quarter, and net income took an even bigger hit. From single-serve coffee giant Green Mountain taking aim at the full-pot business, to Apple paying the price for the iPhone 5c's poor sales, here's a rundown of the week's best and worst in the business world. Facebook (FB) -- Winner Shares of the leading social networking website operator hit new highs on Thursday after it posted another quarter of blowout results. Facebook now sees 1.23 billion unique monthly visitors, 16 percent ahead of where the site's traffic was at a year earlier. Folks are also coming more often, with daily active users up 22 percent. The company has done a great job of monetizing both its desktop site and its mobile app. Online ad revenue soared 74 percent during the quarter. The market was clicking the "Like" button when the report came out, sending the shares 14 percent higher on Thursday. Apple (AAPL) -- Loser These days, Apple lives and dies by the iPhone, and that explains why the stock took a hit on Tuesday after it reported weak sales for its new smartphone. Apple sold a little more than 51 million iPhones during the holiday quarter. This is certainly an impressive number, but analysts were hoping for closer to 56 million devices. The culprit in the shortfall is clearly the iPhone 5c. We know this because it's the one that was readily available after the pricier iPhone 5s sold out during the debut weekend for both products. It was confirmed this week when Apple reported a healthy uptick in average selling prices for its iPhone, implying that the more expensive smartphone was the hotter seller. Apple was trying to make a dent in the entry-level market with the iPhone 5c, but consumers weren't wowed by its pastel colors, its plastic shell, and specs that were inferior to the iPhone 5s, which sold for just $100 more.     Equally difficult as the issue of editorial independence is what will happen to joint ventures between Time Inc. magazine online operations and CNN.com. As an example, for many years, Fortune.com and Money.com have been under the umbrella of CNNMoney.com. Neither of these Time Inc. properties has any traffic of its own to speak of. Time Inc. will need to not only build independent Web operations for Fortune and Money (sources say that this process will begin in late May), it will need to drive readers to them in the extremely crowded online business and financial sector.     Additionally, I will evaluate which institutional investors bought the stock in the recent quarters (institutional backup can tell a lot about a stock), and the initiatives that the company is putting in motion in order to ameliorate its sales and margins.

    Earnings

    The first step is analyzing Symantec Corp�� earnings growth. I am looking for companies that are able to expand both their quarterly and annual earnings by more than 15% a year. Last quarter the company generated 13% quarterly EPS growth when compared to the same quarter last year. Thus, I am not encouraged by SYMC�� numbers. Past growth winners (Apple, Baidu, etc.) generated consistent quarterly EPS growth above 15% and I am certainly looking for that level before investing.

    In addition, SYMC generated three-year average annual EPS growth of 10%. This is an important metric to follow in growth stocks because it highlights how well the stock grew in the past years. I like to invest in companies that are growing consistently.

    Revenue

    Let's take a look at SYMC麓s revenue growth. This is a key metric that needs to be analyzed before investing in a company, as it is one of the scarce figures that cannot be modified through accounting tricks and similar dodges.

    The company reported a 5% quarterly revenue drop year over year. On the contrary, I look for companies that generate more than 15% in quarterly growth.

    When betting on a company, an investor wants to see sales grow or improve over time ���nd not just in the last reported quarter. Looking at the company�� financials in comparison to previous years will give participants a much better idea of how well a company is doing. Symantec Corp generated a three-year average annual sales growth rate of 4%.

    Symantec Inc. (NASDAQ: SYMC) reported second fiscal quarter 2014 results after markets closed on Wednesday. For the quarter, the network security software maker posted adjusted diluted earnings per share (EPS) of $0.50 on revenues of $1.64 billion.
